The names behind famous South Florida landmarks

Here are some of the names behind a few well-known South Florida landmarks. The names of people that left a footprint on the community and still inspire people today.

Stranahan House (Fort Lauderdale): Frank Stranahan built the home in 1901 for himself and his wife who was the first school teacher in Fort Lauderdale. The first floor was originally a trading post and the second floor was a community hall.

Young Circle (Hollywood): Joseph W. Young turned a low-lying tract of land between Hallandale and Dania into his dream city of Hollywood-by-the-sea. The lakes, the broad boulevard, and the eastern golf course and traffic circle were all a part of his master plan.

Sistrunk Boulevard (Broward County): James Franklin Sistrunk was Broward County’s first black doctor. He helped establish Fort Lauderdale’s first medical practice for African Americans.

Virginia S. Young Elementary School (Fort Lauderdale): Virginia Young is so far the only female Fort Lauderdale mayor. She served on the school board and county commission.

Cooley’s Landing (Broward County): Cooley’s Landing is named after William Cooley who was one of the first American settlers and a regional leader in what is now known as Broward County.

Huizenga Plaza (Fort Lauderdale):  The park was named after Wayne Huizenga who founded three Fortune 500 corporations including AutoNation, Blockbuster, and Waste Management.

Broward County: Established in 1915, Broward County is named after Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, Florida’s governor from 1905-1909.
