2014 promises to be a big year for southern Florida for both professional and manufacturing jobs. There will be more jobs and different types of jobs than the state has seen before. A local news source reports that new companies and expanding businesses will create jobs in medical devices and pharmaceutical manufacturing, as well as the traditional businesses of construction, retail and health care, and economic development.
In neighboring Palm Beach County, a startup medical device company has plans to expand from 135 employees to about 200 next year, both professional and manufacturing jobs.
In Broward County, a Medicaid provider and long-nursing care expects to increase its work force by 400 employees. Sunshine Health in Davie employs about 400 at its Sunrise office but expect employment to double. Chief executive Chris Paterson said, “We’ll be adding a substantial amount of new space in Broward over the next six months,” Paterson said. The company is looking for another 50,000 square feet of office space within a 15-mile radius of its Sunrise headquarters to accommodate the increase in work staff and responsibilities.
Many of the relocations and expansions in the works for next year are in the medical component and generic pharmaceutical businesses, said David Coddington, director of business development for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.
As new real estate projects ramp up in Broward and Palm Beach counties, construction-related businesses and related businesses will also see growth.
“Construction jobs are coming back. Boca Raton and West Palm Beach are experiencing record permit activity going back to the peak,” said Kelly Smallridge, president of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County. Smallridge said several of Palm Beach County’s corporate headquarters companies, including wireless tower operator SBA Communications, are expected to expand their businesses and add jobs next year. This fall, SBA bought a $23 million building in Boca Raton, announcing plans to create 86 new jobs with average annual wage of $58,000 and keep the 352 existing jobs over the next five years. “SBA is now a $1 billion company. They operate in many countries, but their home is here,” she said.
